Statement from the Center of African Studies Executive Committee
The Center for African Studies (CAS) joins our colleagues across the university in showing our strong support for the 31 August 2020 letter to the Rutgers administration. The core mission of CAS, which serves all campuses of the Rutgers University system, is to disseminate knowledge of the intellectual, political, and artistic contributions of Africans, and the destructive legacies of slavery, colonialism, and systemic racism.
We, therefore, affirm the essential value of a Black Lives Matter/BIPOC model of inquiry and the need for more such structures at Rutgers. We also affirm that now is the worst time to starve ongoing programs and centers that have long been committed to anti-racist pedagogy and the promotion of faculty and students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.
