Applied Learning Opportunities
The curriculum in African area studies places a premium on courses with applied learning opportunities including internships, honors courses, and independent study programs arranged through students' major departments. In keeping with this emphasis, the Center for African Studies currently sponsors a seminar that prepares students to participate in model Organization of African Unity (OAU) exercises held annually in Washington, DC. The Center also periodically co-sponsors Africa-related internships organized through the United Nations in New York City. The appropriate number of credits for these courses and their application towards distribution requirements will be determined in consultation with the curriculum coordinator.

Africa at Rutgers listserv for students
If you would like to be notified about events, courses, films, talks, internship possibilities, advising for the African Area Studies minor and more, let Barbara Cooper (bacooper@rci.rutgers.edu) know you would like to be added to the CAS student listserv. If you have an event you think other students might want to know about you can also ask to have it posted to the list.

Student Research Award
The Center for African Studies awards the Claude Ake Prize annually to the best undergraduate student paper in African Studies and awards the Ruth First Prize to the best graduate student paper in African Studies.

Africana House
Douglass College maintains several “special interest residences,” one of which is the Africana House. Each house offers 12-24 students the opportunity to become immersed in a language or culture and to interact with other students who share an interest. Sometimes a 1.5 credit course is offered pertaining to the theme of the house. Students must apply to join the residence halls and agree to meet the residence house rules. For more information and an application contact Danielle Gougon, Assistant Dean, Douglass College and Director, Global Programs.
