Graduate Certificate in African Studies

The graduate certificate program in African Studies offered by the Center for African Studies is designed for graduate students within departments and professional programs who would like to pursue a concentrated course of study on Africa. The goals of the certificate program are: to assist Rutgers graduate students in taking advantage of Rutgers resources so that they can develop a well rounded interdisciplinary concentration on Africa; to expose them to ongoing debates about the politics of knowledge production on Africa; and to help foster a sense of community for students and faculty engaged in work on Africa throughout the University.

To obtain a certificate in African Studies, candidates must:

  • Complete the 3 credit graduate seminar:
016:501 Current Issues in the Study of Africa

  • Complete the 3 credit graduate seminar:
016:502 Interdisciplinary Research in African Studies

  • Complete a minimum of three cognate courses in African Studies

  • As a pre-requisite to intensive field research students must demonstrate competence in any African language

  • Students must obtain a grade of 3.0 or better in the courses they hope to apply towards the certificate.

  • Students must complete a significant piece of research in African Studies.

  • Students must seek approval of completion from the Director of the Center for African Studies in conjunction with their faculty advisors.
