South Africa, University of KwaZulu-Natal

Campuses: Pietermaritzburg and Durban

South Africa, Durban beach South Africa, beach vendors South Africa, Pietermaritzburg campus

This area of South Africa, near the beaches of the Natal Coast and the Drakensberg Mountains, is both beautiful and cosmopolitan. Students have the option of studying at the Pietermaritzburg or the Durban campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Students take a full-time course load (as established by the University of KwaZulu-Natal) in any discipline offered by the university’s eight faculties and forty-two departments. For example, a student might take Zulu language and culture, South African history, regional economics, or local literature. Students may enroll in one of the many environmental studies programs sponsored by the university. At the Pietermaritzburg campus, students may opt to take a CASE course, “Citizenship and Community Service,” taught in the Department of Political Science. The 300 level equivalent course entails thirteen two-hour seminars, plus thirteen one-hour tutorials and forty hours of community service (four hours per week for ten weeks). The course explores issues of citizenship in South Africa’s nascent democracy and includes community service placements with non-profit service agencies in greater Pietermaritzburg. Training, placements, site supervision, and internship evaluation are handled by the Internship Office of the Center for University Educational Development. Service experience forms the basis of discussion in seminars and recitation sections and is incorporated into three research paper assignments. There is a final examination at the end of the session. In addition to this required course, students take up to four additional courses from any department at the university.
