Interesting Materials to Teach Math

For a useful overview see "Geometry from Africa: Mathematical and Educational Explorations" (1999, Paulus Gerdes) (The Mathematical Association of America, Washington DC, directly available from http://www.maa.org , go to 'publications' and then to 'bookstore')

For a children's book on mathematics and story telling, see "Drawings from Angola : Living Mathematics" (also available from www.lulu.com).

Background information is available in: "Sona Geometry from Angola: Mathematics of an African Tradition" (2006, Paulus Gerdes) (Polimetrica, Monza, Italy, directly available from http://www.polimetrica.com/, search 'gerdes').

For high school pupils:
"Lusona: Geometrical recreations from Africa" (L'Harmattan, Paris, France, directly available from: http://www.editions-harmattan.fr/index.asp, search 'gerdes' or 'lusona') (bilingual edition in English and French)

Other classical books on mathematics in Africa are: "Africa Counts" by the late Claudia Zaslavsky and "African Fractals" by Ron Eglash.

"Women, Art and Geometry in Southern Africa" (Paulus Gerdes) (Africa World Press) is currently out of print, but still available from online retailers like amazon.com.
