The African Studies Graduate Affiliates present a workshop entitled, "Resonances of Resistance: Young Scholars' New Work in African Studies ." The panel will consist of of 4 advanced graduate or recently graduated PhDs who will present work. A graduate discussant will follow each 15-20 minute presenter. The African Studies Association presents the 2008 Annual Meeting entitled, “Knowledge of Africa: The Next Fifty Years” The ASA will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Annual Meeting during the 51st Annual Meeting at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers. The first Annual Meeting was held September 8-10, 1958 in Evanston, IL, just north of Chicago.

The Department of French, CAS, Department of African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures, and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies present a literary conference entitled, "Littératures d'Expression Française -- Pistes, Trajets, Destinations" (Literatures in French -- Paths, Trajectories, Destinations) The presenters include Winifred Woodhull (University of California, San Diego) author of Transfigurations of the Maghreb; Jack Yeager (University of Louisiana, Baton Rouge) author of The Vietnamese Novel in French; Mildred Mortimer (University of Colorado, Boulder) author of Journeys through the French African Novel. Their presentations will be in English, with a French summary. Senegalese novelist Boubacar Boris Diop will deliver the keynote address in French, "Être un écrivain négro-africain francophone aujourd'hui," with an English summary.

CAS, Department of Africana Studies, Academic and Public Partnerships in the Arts and Humanities, and the Busia Foundation International proudly present a screening of the BFI film, "The Prof: A Man Remembered, The Life, Vision, and Legacy of Dr. K.A. Busia," a moving documentary of the extraordinary scholar, statesman and man of God who rose from humble beginnings to become Prime Minister of the Second Republic of Ghana. The screening will take place in Professor of Africana Studies Edward Ramsamy's 014:490 course, "Senior Seminar in African Studies." Introductory remarks will be given by Abena P.A. Busia (English). In addition to the screening The Busia Foundation International's selected photographs of Dr. K.A. Busia will be featured in an exhibit displayed in the 4th floor hallway of Alexander Library from Monday, April 7 through Friday, April 11.

Busia (English) and is edited by photographer Peter E. Randall. Barbara Bickford, one of the contributing photographers, will discuss selected prints on Wednesday, April 30th. The book is a photographic celebration of Ghana's 50th anniversary as the first sub-Saharan colony to become an independent nation.

CAS presents the First Annual Graduate Student and Research Fellows Workshop 2008. The workshop will assist Rutgers graduate students working on issues related to Africa in: getting to know each other; making contact with faculty outside their departments working on Africa; and in gaining experience presenting work in progress. The three panels are titled as follows: "Gender and the State;" "Rights and Environments;" and "Imagined Futures." A light dinner will be offered.

CAS, Office of Undergraduate Education, and TWESE present a documentary screening of "Democracy in Dakar" (the result of a collaboration between Ben Herson, founder and director of the Nomadic Wax record label, and Magee McIlvaine, co-founder and director of the film company Sol Productions), a groundbreaking film about youth, hip-hop and politics in Africa. The filmmakers will present a montage prior to the screening and will conclude the program with a post-discussion. Parking is permitted in Lots 51 and 67. *Please note the room has been changed from the Multi Purpose Room to Center Hall, which is also in the Busch Campus Center.*

Rutgers University's Department of History, Center for Historical Analysis, Cornell University's Africana Studies and Research Center, Columbia University's Institute for African Studies and Ohio State University's Department of History, along with many more co-sponsors (please see workshop poster for the complete sponsor list) proudly present a workshop entitled, "Re-evaluating Africa and World War II." This workshop seeks to explore the social, cultural, political and economic impact of World War II on the continent. In addition, the workshop will explore the possibility of launching a major publication project that would result in the production of a text and supporting materials (web site, CD-ROMS, images, primary documents) that can be used in advanced undergraduate classes on Africa, the African diaspora, and more general classes on World War II. A "Film Festival on Africans in the War" is also included in the programming: "Days of Glory - Indigènes" will be shown on Thursday, March 27 in Alexander Library at 8pm and "761st Tank Battalion" will be shown on Friday, March 28 in Milledoler Hall 100. CAS, Office of Undergraduate Education, Department of English, Academic and Public Partnerships in the Arts and Humanities, and Mason Gross School of the Arts present a talk and workshop by Esailama Diouf (Ph.D. Student, Performance Studies, Northwestern University) entitled, "Staging the African: Parallel Traditions of Dance and Cultural Identity." Madiou Diouf, a percussionist of West African rhythms, will accompany the movement/dance workshop. The program will take place during Professor of English Abena P.A. CAS,the African Studies Association and the Department of French present the Third Annual African Studies Association Presidential Lecture at Rutgers with a talk in French by ASA President Aliko Songolo (Professor of French and African Language and Literature, University of Wisconsin-Madison) entitled, "Termes de (dés)affection: une généalogie antillaise." The English translation is "Terms of (dis)affection: A Caribbean Genealogy." The talk will be held in Professor of French Renée Larrier's course, "Caribbean Literature: Histoire(s) et Identités."

CAS presents a talk by Soumia Boutkhil (Fulbright Scholar hosted by the Department of Women's and Gender Studies and Assistant Professor, English, University Mohamed I Oujda, Morocco) entitled, " 'never been to me': in/visibility of minorities in Morocco." The talk will focus on strategies to change gender cultures from hierarchical to egalitarian models.

CAS and the Office of Undergraduate Education's Multicultural Student Engagement present the "Dinner, Movie and Dialogue" Series spring semester film selection: Artificial Eye's "Bamako" (Directed by Abderrahmane Sissako, 112 minutes, 2006, Mali). Melé is a bar singer, her husband Chaka is out of work and the couple is on the verge of breaking up… In the courtyard of the house they share with other families, a trial court has been set up. African civil society spokesmen have taken proceedings against the World Bank and the IMF whom they blame for Africa's woes… Amidst the pleas and the testimonies, life goes on in the courtyard. Chaka does not seem to be concerned by Africa's novel desire to fight for its rights… French Professor Renée Larrier will introduce the film and lead the post-discussion.
